Monadnock New Horizons Band

Monadnock New Horizons BandThe Monadnock New Horizons Band (MNHB) is a band program for adults. You can pick up that instrument you haven’t touched in decades or choose an instrument that you’ve never played and learn how to play. In a few months, you and your newfound band friends will play a concert for your family and friends. Musicians Donna Morse and Vicki Moore will serve as conductors and instructors. The New Horizons Music concept, the result of a groundbreaking music course at the University of Rochester’s (NY) Eastman School of Music, has become popular performing ensemble in communities across the U.S. The Monadnock New Horizons Band launches in the Fall of 2014 at the United Church of Christ in Keene.

Donna Morse decided to start a New Horizons Band in the Monadnock region while attending a New Horizons Band Camp in August 2013. The motivation and talent of all the musicians at camp was inspiring. Thinking it would be a great group for the Keene area, she came home and started the process of forming a local band.

Rehearsals/classes are offered twice a week for a fall semester and spring semester at the Keene UCC Church on Central Square in Keene. The Tuesday evening rehearsal (7:00 PM) is the main rehearsal where participants play as a group and split off into smaller groups of like instruments. Thursday’s midday rehearsal (12:30 – 1:30) is an optional drop-in class with Donna where time is spent taking a closer look at the band music as well as topics in music theory/listening and answering questions. Each season begins with an introductory meeting and ‘play day’ where anyone interested will learn about the program, how to get an instrument and get an opportunity to try different band instruments under the guidance of teachers and other local musicians. Tuition is $100 per semester, not including instrument rental. A final concert occurs at the end of each semester.
